Student Responsibility

The mission of EXCEL: Excellence in Home Education is to help parents develop students who are self-governed by Jesus Christ under the authority of their parents. We are openly and purposefully a Christian group and want to reflect that in the way we dress and behave.

  1. Students must be mature enough to follow the guidelines and expectations of the teachers in whose classes they are enrolled.
  2. Students are to be respectful to adults and other students, treating everyone as they would like to be treated.
  3. Students must follow the dress code strictly, using good judgment in submission to the authority of their parents and out of respect for EXCEL guidelines.
  4. Class attendance is NOT optional. Students are expected to be present for each scheduled class date unless parents have made prior arrangements with teacher(s).
  5. Students are responsible to be in class on time, unless EXCEL administration has been informed before they are tardy (as in the case of car trouble, etc.).
  6. All assignments, tests, and projects are to be completed by the date due. Most teachers do not accept late work.
  7. Students are expected to have all materials necessary for each class session.
  8. Students who are absent are responsible to check with teachers to obtain missed assignments and make arrangements for turning in work.
  9. Students driving to class are expected to arrive on time, entering and exiting the parking lot using caution and driving at a safe speed.
  10. Students may not leave campus for lunch or between classes. Students are expected to help clean up after lunch by putting away chairs and tables.
  11. Students may not invite guests to attend lunch or class without permission from an administrator. Parents will be notified, and the student and guest will be asked to leave if permission has not been granted.
  12. Students are responsible for their behavior and attitude while attending classes with EXCEL.
  13. Students must keep cell phones in backpack during class time.  Students may not text message or receive calls during class time.

EXCEL Student Code

EXCEL's teacher seek to perpetuate ethical principles based on biblical moral values, reflecting Christian integrity while promoting high academic standards. In order for teachers to be effective and for optimal learning to take place, teachers will expect students to abide by accepted standards of proper classroom behavior. Each teacher will also make and communicate guidelines specific to behavior in his or her classroom, and students are expected to abide by those standards as well. All EXCEL guidelines relate to four general standards of behavior:

1. Students must show respect to all who are in authority over them.

2. Students must show respect for their classmates.

3. Students must complete all assigned work and report to class, study hall, or student lounge on time.

4. Students must not discuss problems with others not directly related to the problem.

Specific guidelines for behavior while attending EXCEL classes are:

1. CD players, cassette players, headphones, or other similar devices are not allowed on campus. Small tape recorders may be allowed for taping of a lecture with the tutor’s permission. Laptop computers may be allowed with the teacher's permission, but the use of headphones with the computer should be discussed with the administrator.

2. Any student who verbalizes intent to harm himself or others will be taken seriously. Parents will be promptly informed and appropriate law enforcement notified, if deemed necessary, to protect the safety of staff and students.

3. The staff of EXCEL reserves the right to search backpacks, purses, or any personal items, without notice, for any reason the administrator or staff deems necessary. EXCEL does not allow the possession of weapons of any kind, drugs (including cigarettes, cigars, etc.), and alcohol. Parents will be notified immediately about any violation of this policy, and appropriate law enforcement will be notified, depending on the severity of the offense. Immediate expulsion (see definitions, p. 9) from current and future classes, with no refunds, will occur for any violation of this type.

EXCEL Dress Code

All EXCEL students are expected to adhere to modest dress, as becomes a Christian young man or woman. As a general rule, please consider and respect the standards of others and the standards expected by the conservative church congregation whose facilities we are using. If your apparel and/or accessories could be distracting or offensive to a student, teachers, parents, or members of HBC who happen by, please refrain from wearing these items to EXCEL classes. The EXCEL dress code applies equally to students, teachers, staff, volunteers, and visitors.

1. Parents are responsible for ensuring that students adhere to the dress code. Parents of any student wearing inappropriate clothing will be contacted.

2. No Goth-style clothing or makeup may be worn.

3. Shorts must be of modest walking length. No short skirts or dresses or short shorts are allowed. As a general rule, all apparel must be no shorter than the wearer’s fingertips when arms are held at the side in a relaxed position.

4 No tube tops, tank tops, or spaghetti straps are allowed unless worn over another layer of clothing (for example, a T-shirt).

5. No clothing with inappropriate or offensive messages or graphics are allowed.

6. No midriff skin, front or back, may be seen while the wearer is standing, sitting, bending over, reaching, or moving. No unpatched holes in any garment are allowed.

7. No undergarments may be visible at any time. This rule applies to both males and females.

8. Shoes must be worn at all times.

9. If a student wears any jewelry or accessories that might be distracting to a tutor or another student, the student may be asked to remove the item(s) during class. In addition:

    • Females may wear no more than two pairs of earrings on the ears.

    • Males may not wear earrings.

    • No other visible body piercings—including but not limited to tongues, eyebrows, lips, or nose— are allowed.

10. No head coverings may be worn inside the building. This rule applies to both males and females.

11. No visible tattoos are allowed.

12. Hair must be a natural color.

13. It is impossible to make a comprehensive list of all forms of inappropriate dress. In the event that a judgment needs to be made, the administrator will make the determination of appropriateness. If in doubt, don’t wear it!
